What is a VDA 4913 Message?

The VDA 4913 message, typically known as Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN), is an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) document a customer gets from its supplier as a notification about an expected delivery. The file follows the VDA (German Association of the Automotive Industry or in German Verband der Automobilindustrie e. V.) standards and is used by many manufacturers in the automotive industries. The new VDA 4987 message replaces the legacy VDA 4913 message.

The use of the VDA 4913 ASN Message

VDA 4913 ASN messages inform customers about deliveries shipped by the supplier. The information contains the relevant details of a shipment. A VDA 4913 message contains also the information describing how the shipped materials are packed. In this sense the VDA 4913 ASN message serves as a classic delivery note.

VDA 4913 ASN Message in context of VDA 4984 messages

A VDA 4913 message is often used as a follow-up message on a delivery schedule, which was commonly sent before via a VDA 4905 message. The customer first sends a delivery plan as VDA 4905, outlining what the supplier has to deliver at which time. As part of the delivery, the supplier then creates a VDA 4913 ASN message indicating this delivery schedule.
